Genius RF Microneedling Procedure in Portland, OR

Anti-Aging & Repair

Areas of Concern

Radiofrequency microneedling like Genius RF can be used to treat a variety of skin concerns, conditions, and other ailments. Utilizing ultrafine needles to encourage collagen production and skin rejuvenation, RF microneedling can treat the following:
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Saggy skin
• Acne scarring
• Skin texture
• Large pores

It’s a misconception that facial blemishes like wrinkles, dark spots, enlarged pores, lines, and folds appear because surface skin stretches over time. While this is a consequence of significant weight loss, the leading cause of skin laxity is the loss of collagen, a vital skin support protein. Genius RF is a non-surgical radiofrequency treatment designed as a percutaneous collagen induction therapy that replenishes the skin’s healing process deep in the underlying tissue.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Douglas Key is proud to advance Genius RF, the next generation of radiofrequency devices. This latest cosmetic procedure to fight aging skin minimizes pain while offering men and women in the Portland area skin smoothness from various signs of aging and acne scarring as well.

The Importance of Collagen Induction Therapy

Collagen’s strong protein fibers act as a support structure to your skin’s surface. As your body ages, its ability to regenerate collagen diminishes year after year. Environmental factors like pollution and sun exposure also help deplete collagen further. This collagen loss leads to the emergence of skin elasticity, which leads to the facial imperfections mentioned above.

Genius RF enhances skin texture from the inside out. Its radiofrequency energy heats collagen-rich tissue without affecting the surface skin. Its advanced technology allows us to control radiofrequency to promote skin tissue contraction and collagen regeneration. Your skin will see a visible improvement in a matter of a few months.

The Genius RF Technology

Genius RF employs two collagen-producing technologies to tighten skin: radiofrequency energy and microneedling.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a collagen-inducing treatment that involves several thin needles causing tiny holes to enter the skin. With each point of these tiny needles entry, there is a controlled skin injury that your body will determine needs healing. This natural response prompts the body to renew collagen production to repair the skin. Adjacent skin tissue to each channel will also improve in texture during microneedling treatment.

Radiofrequency

Once Genius RF needles penetrate the skin, they deliver energy to the underlying skin tissues. This process will coalesce existing collagen to produce a smoother, more uniform skin presence on the surface. It will also promote an increase in new collagen production to further tighten your skin.

How the Microneedeling Fractional Radiofrequency Device Works

Genius RF’s advanced technology delivers energy to the deep dermis through insulated microneedles without destroying the epidermis.

Research has shown that heating the dermis to a high enough temperature vigorously stimulates the body’s healing response causing collagen coagulation. As the collagen bundles are coagulated, they dehydrate and immediate tissue shrinkage is seen. Old, lax collagen and elastic fibers are replaced with fresh, young, and better-organized fibers leading to skin rejuvenation.

RF Microneedling Benefits

Although restoring a taught, youthful look is the primary benefit of Genius RF, there are other skin improvements that patients enjoy. These include:

  • Reliable and safe for all skin types
  • Quick and comfortable treatment sessions
  • Natural results giving you a fresh appearance
  • Minimal recovery and downtime
  • Diminished skin laxity and acne scarring
  • High patient satisfaction

The Genius RF system employs an advanced collagen induction technology that creates more collagen and elastin. Increasing these levels makes the procedure a fantastic anti-aging treatment with numerous enhancements to skin health and appearance.

Genius RF FAQs

The Genius RF is a high intensity focused, fractional micro-needling system, delivering radio-frequency through insulated micro-needles. By creating micro “injuries” in the skin, Genius RF induces the skin’s self-repair mechanism, which triggers new collagen synthesis while the skin is tightened by radio-frequency. The Genius RF is used to tighten sagging, loose skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and scars while improving the skin’s overall texture.

Genius RF treatment is performed safely and precisely in Dr. Key’s medical suite in Portland, Oregon. The handheld Genius RF system with its sterile needle head is gently pressed into the skin and delivers radio-frequency deep into the dermis through 49 microscopic needle tips.

Once your session is over, we will provide you with post-care instructions to get the most out of your Genius RF benefits. These instructions include what skincare products to use and what to avoid. In most cases, we ask our patients to restrict themselves to a basic moisturizer, sheer sunscreen, and unscented products. If you are prone to adverse reactions to new products, we suggest spot testing before your treatment. We will also ask you to refrain from using makeup for a few days.

Genius RF uses fractional tissue heating, not bulk heating. The needles are insulated, needle depths are variable, coagulation occurs for maximal collagen stimulation, and the epidermis is safely protected from the heat, allowing for a very safe and effective treatment for all skin types.

Although many patients have seen good results with Microneedling, this treatment does not employ the fantastic enhancements that radiofrequency technology does. The results are more dramatic with Genius RF, which produces a higher level of skin tightening.

Yes. Genius RF can be combined with several other aesthetic treatments to rejuvenate the skin. The micro-wound channels created are great delivery areas for topical creams and serums. Also, options like dermal fillers, Botox, and laser treatments can help enhance results.

Another benefit of Genius RF is that it can be applied anywhere on the body. The most common areas are the face, neck, chest, thighs, knees, and abdomen.

The Genius RF can be used on any part of the body, with the most popular areas being the face, chest, and neck. The treatment can also be effective on most types of stretch marks, scarring, and on the arms.

With an experienced provider like Dr. Douglas Key and his staff, a full-face treatment takes approximately 1 hour. If the neck is included, this would take an additional 30 minutes. Numbing with a topical agent before the procedure takes an hour and a half.Numbing with a topical agent before the procedure takes an hour.

All patients have a topical numbing agent applied 30—90 minutes before the procedure. While for most areas of the face or neck, this is adequate, other areas such as the forehead and around the lips often require more anesthesia for optimal comfort. Once the skin has been numbed, Dr. Key or his assistants will administer extra local anesthesia to the most sensitive areas.

Even though the Genius needle tips are microscopic, the treatment can cause a pricking sensation with some heat. Areas where there are deeper imperfections may experience more discomfort than areas with superficial imperfections.

While there is no actual downtime required after the Genius RF, your skin may be red, with some pinpoint bleeding, which is normal. Any redness usually lasts from 1—24 hours, and you may experience a little swelling. Your skin may become dry a few days after your treatment. Some patients are able to return immediately to work, while others prefer to schedule their treatment over the weekend.

The initial redness should subside very rapidly within the first hour and, together with the swelling, should disappear after about 24—36 hours. It’s unusual for patients to report redness for more than a few days.

Generally, a week or two after your first session with Dr. Key in Portland, Oregon, you should notice tightening, as well as a more even tone to your skin. The results can be more subtle for areas affected by deeper imperfections, and additional treatments may be required. Micro-needling stimulates new collagen and elastin production, and this will continue for up to six months. Tightening after your treatment can also be expected to continue for up to six months.

Any skin care creams you use after treatment should only be those prescribed. Avoid makeup until the morning after your treatment and use caution with touching the skin with unclean hands or towels. There are no activity or sun restrictions beyond wearing an approved sunscreen!

For maximum benefit, the recommended number of treatments for optimal results is three. For some people, only one treatment might be sufficient, but this is uncommon. Younger patients seeking only preventative treatments can schedule one yearly. Acne scarring clients should consider at least three Genius RF treatments but might find 5—6 to be more effective.

It’s recommended that patients wait 4—6 weeks between Genius RF treatments to allow enough time for the skin to heal.

Dermal fillers below the skin are generally not affected, since the Genius RF micro-needles do not penetrate the skin deeply enough. However, Genius RF should be performed before dermal fillers are administered to ensure optimal results.

Dr. Key routinely treats the neck and chest in conjunction with the face. Other areas commonly treated are upper arm laxity, the knee area, as well as scars from abdominal surgery. It is also possible to treat hyperhidrosis (excess sweating in the underarm area) with the Genius RF.

Each area is treated with Genius RF to at least three depths, but only two depths are treated if the skin is very thin. Some areas are treated at 4—5 depths. Typically, one pass per depth is performed, but two or more passes may be completed at a specific depth in certain circumstances.

During your consultation, Dr. Key will decide if you are a candidate for the Genius RF, since it may not be safe for patients with certain health problems. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not receive Genius RF, and neither should patients with pacemakers or metal anywhere near the face.

Our skin’s pigment is produced by melanocytes, which are found in the superficial layers of the skin. The Genius RF protects the epidermis because its needles are insulated, and the depth can be adjusted. The heat from the radio-frequency is confined to the dermis, below the most superficial layer.

The Genius RF is safer than a laser in treating acne scars and with less downtime and no risk to the eyes. Patients with darker skin tones can be treated more safely with the Genius RF than a laser because a laser heats the upper layer of skin, known as the epidermis. Lasers also carry the risk of causing pigment changes (darker or lighter).

While the collagen created during Genius RF can last at least seven years, this depends on overall skin health, the patient’s health, age, smoking habits, sun exposure, tanning, and lifestyle. It is usually recommended to return for a single “touch up” session every 12—18 months.

The Genius RF treatment is considered safe for all skin types. Side effects are temporary swelling, redness, and pinpoint bleeding, which should subside within 24—36 hours. Should you experience any worrisome symptoms, please call Dr. Key as soon as possible.
