Botox® in Portland
Presenting Botox to Portland and Beaverton Patients
Aging is a universal experience, but that doesn’t mean wrinkles are universally loved. In fact, many individuals battle with wrinkle development internally, becoming insecure as a result.
Wrinkles are a natural part of aging that may be exacerbated by genetics or lifestyle.
No matter the cause of your wrinkles, many people seek to reverse the clock to preserve their smooth, young skin. Fortunately, Botox can reverse these signs of aging and prevent further wrinkles from developing.
Key Laser Institute offers comprehensive Botox injections to Portland and Beaverton patients. Dr. Key and our skilled injectors are dedicated to helping you achieve your desired cosmetic or therapeutic results with our non-invasive procedures.
Areas of Concern
Botox has been used as a cosmetic enhancer and effective agent for preserving youth for decades. However, more recent research has revealed that Botox can also help with certain medical concerns.
Botox’s cosmetic and therapeutic purposes include:
- Frown Lines
- Forehead Lines
- Crow’s Feet
- Urinary Incontinence
- Hyperhidrosis
- Glabellar Lines
- Chronic Migraines
- Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
- Dystonia
- Blepharospasm
How Does Botox Work?
The media often presents Botox as an anti-aging agent that magically erases wrinkles. However, this is a common misconception.
Botox is a neuromodulator designed to relax the underlying muscle contractions that cause wrinkles to form. Botox’s solution utilizes botulinum toxin, a protein intended to relax and limit muscle spasms and excessive movement.
In turn, the slight paralysis of the muscles smooths skin and discourages new wrinkles from forming.

What You Can Expect During Your First Experience With Botox
Botox is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical cosmetic treatment that features little to no downtime or preparation. That said, all surgical procedures and cosmetic treatments come with advantages and potential disadvantages. Understanding what to expect with Botox from start to finish is key to understanding your treatment results.
Before Your Botox Treatment
With Botox, there is hardly any prep work involved before your appointment. Just make sure the intended treatment area is clean and free of makeup.
If you have a low pain tolerance, you can ask Dr. Key about topical numbing anesthetics or other forms of pain management. If we are treating hyperhidrosis in the hands and feet, numbing cream will most likely be applied.
During Your Botox Treatment
During the actual procedure, most patients report little to no pain. Some even claim that the injection feels less painless than popping a pimple.
To inject the solution, a small syringe with a thin needle pierces beneath the dermal layer of the treatment area. Depending on the site of your treatment, the injections may be administered intradermally (in the lower layer of the skin) or subcutaneously (between the muscle and the skin.)
The number of injections depends on the treatment area and the number of CCs of Botox you’re receiving. The procedure should only take 15 to 20 minutes.
After Your Botox Treatment
Botox offers patients the opportunity to improve signs of aging without any downtime. After you’ve received your Botox treatments, you can resume your day immediately after your procedure. However, patients are encouraged to avoid doing a few activities for 24 hours. Patients should also limit their contact with the treated area and forgo makeup the next day.
Additionally, avoid lying down more than two to four hours after your treatment and limit rigorous exercise. Lying down may increase circulation to the face, which may contribute to the migration of Botox to muscles we didn’t intend to treat. This migration may potentially cause lid droop, brow droop, or other unwanted side effects.
As with all treatments, there may be a slight risk of side effects or concerns. In order to minimize the chances of these occurring, be sure to follow Dr. Key’s instructions for optimal results.
Results
Minor swelling may hinder your ability to see results immediately after treatment, but swelling will subside in about two days. Once the swelling subsides, you’ll begin to see results usually about three days after your session, but full results will continue to develop for a week. The resulting appearance will last up to four months before beginning to fade. Regular maintenance is needed to optimize results.
Frequently Asked Questions about Botox
How Long Do Botox Injections Last?
Since Botox works by paralyzing muscles and nerves, it wears off over time as the body metabolizes the neurotoxin and new neurotransmitters override the botulin toxin.
In general, Botox lasts about three to four months. For some individuals, it may last up to four to six months. How long your Botox lasts may depend on a variety of factors, such as:
- Age
- Lifestyle
- Skincare routine
- Dosage
- Body chemistry
- Stress management
Dr. Key and the experts at Key Laser Institute can design a skincare routine and treatment timeline to ensure your Botox results are effective and long-lasting.
What Are the Side Effects of Botox?
The most common side effects include pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site. These symptoms are mild and generally improve after a day or two. Less common side effects include:
- Flu-like symptoms
- Headache
- Neck pain
- Upset stomach
- Temporary drooping eyelids (ptosis)
- Eye irritation or redness
You should not receive Botox if you are treatment if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have:
- Neuromuscular disease
- Drooping eyelids
- Weak facial muscles
What should you not do after Botox?
We recommend you to remain upright (no lying flat) and do not rub the area of injection for at least 6 hours post treatment. Also, no aerobic exercise on the day of injection. Exercise can resume the following day.
Who should not get Botox?
Individuals who have a neuromuscular disorder and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not receive Botox. If you have an active skin infection, we may ask that you wait to receive treatment.
Why cant you lay down after Botox?
Lying down increases circulation to the face which can contribute to migration of Botox to muscles we didnt intend to treat. This migration can cause lid droop or brow droop, or other unwanted side effects.
Can you ruin Botox?
Botox results can be ruined when pressure is placed on the treatment area during the first three days after treatment or when people exercise during the first few days after treatment. NSAIDs and alcohol should be avoided to prevent bleeding and sun exposure or high temperatures should be avoided for 48 hours to prevent swelling.
What is the safest area to get Botox?
Botox is FDA-approved for many areas of the face, including crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, horizontal forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, lipstick lines, and more. It can also be safely injected into the hands, feet, or armpits to treat hyperhidrosis and in the scalp to treat chronic migraines.
Can Botox Lift Eyebrows?
Yes, Botox can temporarily lift eyebrows by relaxing the muscles (corrugator supercilii, orbicularis oculi, and procerus) that pull them down. Botox injections are an excellent non-invasive alternative to a surgical brow or other surgical procedures.
Does Botox Increase the Appearance of Aging or Wrinkles Once It Wears Off?
No, Botox does not increase the signs of aging once it wears off. As your body metabolizes the botulin toxin, your muscles regain their ability to move, and your skin returns to its natural state.
Is 50 Too Old for Botox?
There is no age limit for receiving Botox! People of any age can use Botox to relax wrinkles and prevent them from forming or worsening. Plus, 50 is not too old for anything — primarily cosmetic and anti-aging treatments! In fact, many women in their 60s and older enjoy the refreshed look you can only get from Botox.
Does Botox Cause Weight Gain?
No, Botox does not cause weight gain, and these injections do not affect your metabolism or digestion. Botox simply relaxes the facial muscles, preventing movement and the formation of wrinkles.
What Is the Best Age to Begin Botox?
Botox is most effective as a preventative treatment for wrinkles and aging. By decreasing movement in the target areas, Botox can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and prevent fine lines from becoming deep wrinkles. At Key Laser Institute, we recommend that our patients begin Botox when they notice fine lines in their late 20s or early 30s.
